The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre Education Program provides the following information to assist Victorian schools in counselling students who are seeking asylum or who are refugees with temporary protection visas:
Do you have students seeking asylum or refugees with temporary protection? Do they hold Bridging Visas, Temporary Protection Visas, or Safe Haven Enterprise Visas?
It is important that schools are aware that students holding these visas have limited options post-secondary school. We want to ensure that students on Bridging Visas, Temporary Protection Visas, and Safe Haven Enterprise Visas are able to maximise their educational opportunities.
The Asylum Seeker Vocational Education and Training (ASVET) initiative allows people seeking asylum on Bridging Visa E and refugees with Temporary Protection Visas and Safe Haven Enterprise Visas to access Skills First VET courses at the subsidised domestic concessional rate.
We encourage people seeking asylum on Bridging Visas and refugees with temporary protection to study VET in school. A VET qualification gives students the practical skills and knowledge needed to transition into the workforce.
There are also some asylum seeker scholarships available at a Bachelors level each year, however these are quite limited and students need to be made aware of this.
Please call the ASRC Innovation Hub on 03 8537 9500 to speak with someone from the Education Program about the options available to your students.
